PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD – Durable Slate recently started consulting on the restoration of The Red House, a historic structure that serves as the seat for the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago.

Construction Services and Supplies, Ltd., a Trinidad-based contractor, selected Durable Slate to consult on the project because of the company’s reputation and experience in slate roofing and copper fabrication and installation. Currently, training is being done on the copper rotunda, located in the Port of Spain in Trinidad, an island nation in the Caribbean Sea.

A significant portion of the consulting job requires Durable Slate to provide training sessions on the proper installation of slate roofing, copper box gutters, decorative elements and a sizable standing-seam roof, said Shane Day, Durable Slate’s Director of Special Projects.

For the duration of the project, Day will serve as the on-location adviser for any copper-based installation. John Sheridan, a subcontractor who specializes in copper fabrications, is collaborating with Durable Slate as a consultant on the project.

“Our job is to make sure the training covers all the bases for the slate and copper installation. Before this project is through, we hope to have the contractor’s employees trained and certified in slate and copper,” Day said.

Consultation on the The Red House is expected to run through the end of the year.

Durable Slate’s Owner John Chan and Chief Operating Officer Gary Howes originally met with Trinidad officials in May of 2017 to start drafting specifications on the project.

Trinidad’s Red House is among a handful of international consulting jobs that Durable Slate has been selected for. In January 2016, Durable Slate’s John Chan trained an international contractor’s employees in the installation of a Vermont slate roof on the Pezet Complex in Lima, Peru. In addition to slate, the consulting job included custom fabrication of sheet metal, barrel dormers. Day also served as consultant on this job.
