Built in 1905, First United Methodist is a stunning part of downtown Lancaster. Complex stained glass, a lush clay tile roof, crowned by a stunning copper cupola, the eye can't help but to be drawn skyward.
A century later, this cupola - designed to last for 80 years - was showing clear signs of leakage and general deterioration.
The Durable Slate Company was contracted to completely replicate the cupola, along with its supporting wood structure in time for the church's centennial celebration. Ultimately, we also installed a custom gutter system, repaired portions of 10" Conosera clay tile roof, and restored the stained glass below the cupola.
Our hard work was recognized by the National Roofing Contractors Association who awarded us our first Gold Circle award in 2006 as Project of the Year and the Gold Circle Safety Award for our commitment to both employee and pedestrian safety, going so far as to close two main streets in downtown Lancaster while the cross and sky-light were removed.
