Since 2011, The Durable Slate Company has helped to restore and maintain the estate of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens.
Stan Hywet is located in Akron, Ohio, and is one of the largest houses in the United States. Built in 1911, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in January of 1975. It is also a United States National Historic Landmark.
Durable Slate’s work on this estate was exterior restoration of both the roof and gutters. Working on not only the Manor House, Durable also worked on smaller buildings throughout the estate grounds, including the Carriage House, Gate Lodge, and the Gardeners Cottage. Since the roofs of these structures are made of slate, essential repairs were a major part of the restoration.
From minor repairs on the Gate Lodge, to replacing the roof on the Manor House, Durable Slate’s involvement with Hywet Hall’s rehabilitation and preservation has been no small task. In addition to slate repairs, the copper gutters and valleys were replaced completely. The Durable Slate Company continues its involvement to help keep the estate not only historically accurate, but also aesthetically pleasing.
